Are Boiling Water Taps Worth the Cost?

On December 25, 2014, in Commentary, by Erik

The latest in prepping water for tea, coffee, or other hot beverages is to obtain a hot tap, which dispenses boiling water instantly without waiting for the kettle. While it is convenient, the question is about cost. Quooker, a company that sells hot taps, claims that the cost of using a hot tap costs three pence per day. However, is that really true?

If you regularly boil your kettle, three pence per day sounds reasonable. However, Andy Smale, a technical director at Expert Energy, says that after calculating the energy costs to make tea or coffee with a Quooker actually would cost 5.27 pence per 24 hours. Granted, making the same amount of tea or coffee with a kettle costs 5.46 pence per 24 hours, but it will take several years before any savings from using a Quooker would be made.
