Should Your Drinking Water Contain Lithium?

On February 16, 2015, in Commentary, by Erik

There have been several debates within the UK on whether or not fluoride should be in tap water. Champions of fluoride proclaim the dental benefit while its detractors are concern about possible side effects. Now Scottish researchers are investigating whether or not to put small amounts of lithium into water in order to boost the overall mood of a region.

While the intentions are good (the researchers claim it could curb suicide rates), the long-term effects are still unaccounted for. While traces of lithium are naturally in Scottish water, the concentration is incredibly low and has no proven effect one way or another. The fact that lithium is prescribed as a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder shows that it can help such people become lucid, the idea of altering the brain chemistry of a non-bipolar person might not bode well for them.
