Severe drought is a growing risk because of population growth and climate change, according to Water UK. The group reported that immediate action was needed to manage the future supply and demand of water in order to avoid shortages. Proposals included promoting water efficiency, improving building standards, building new reservoirs and improving the network which can move water from one region to another. The cost of work was estimated at £4 per year per household, against a potential economic impact of over £1 billion per day if a widespread, severe drought were to occur.
