Microplastics have been found in the bottom of the Great Australian Bright. This is significant because this area was considered a ‘pristine’ biological hotspot. This proves that even in the most remote parts of the ocean, there is still plastic. The problem with micro and nanoplastics is now even the smallest living organisms such as coral can ingest the plastic. There needs to be governmental and legislative action taken to both reduce plastic use and to address the areas that have been affected.
