Last week, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, announced that access to safe drinking water and sanitation are the most urgent issues affecting the world at large. “The onset of climate change, growing demand on finite water resources from agriculture, and increasing pollution in many areas are hastening a water crisis that can only be addressed by cross-sectoral, holistic planning, and policies- internationally, regionally, and globally,” said Ban.
The 2015 World Water Development report found that unless drastic action and planning are taken, the world will face a 40% shortfall in water supply in 2030. According to the same report nearly three-quarters of a billion people still lack access to clean water and clean toilet facilities.
