Severe winter weather conditions across large parts of England and Wales resulted in some snow and a great deal of rain, culminating in flood warnings and rescue operations. Wind and rain, persistent through the beginning of the week, will continue to throw off travel plans.
More than a hundred flood alerts have been issued. Wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour, allied with rain, have destroyed one significant rail line. Ferry passengers had trouble reaching shore. People were evacuated from flooded homes. Roads have been closed and trains cancelled.
