The European Union is taking steps to protect the environment and water needs throughout the continent. They hope to protect freshwater sources not only to preserve wildlife, but also make sure Europeans have access to the most clean, drinkable water possible.

The Water Framework Directive hopes to help with all that. Guidelines provided by the WFD will protect rivers, lakes, coastal waters, and groundwater than can be used. The water’s quality will be regularly monitored of it’s quality and quantity of biological matter such as fish and plant life along with the chemical quality of the water.
