The Sierra Leonean government has requested help from the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team to prevent an outbreak of disease following large mudslides that have killed at least 500 people. The landslides damaged water and sanitation systems, creating conditions for the outbreaks. The team of experts in disease tracking, microbiology, and logistics was created following the international community’s poor response to the Ebola epidemic in the region. Their task is to support local authorities in disease surveillance and response.
