Each year, one in ten deaths are reportedly linked to obesity. One government official has said that one-third of primary school-aged children leave primary school in a pattern of consumption of excess calories which has caused them to be overweight or obese. Previously, the government sought to improve these statistics by requesting that sweet food manufacturers cut the sugar content of sweet foods. Several of these companies have done just that. Now, the government is attempting to tackle this problem further by asking companies to make common foods such as pizza, chips and burgers with fewer calories.

Key Takeaways:

  • Pizza makers are being urged to trim back the fat. That will help tackle childhood obesity among the young.
  • The same trend happened when it came to sugary drinks in the past. Manufacturers had to cut back on the sugar content being sold to students.
  • Health campaigns were launched and promoted by these various groups. That prompted immediate change among manufacturers that are in the industry.

“Beyond passing a sugary drinks tax into law, the government has so far provided thin gruel for parents and health professionals keen to see significant progress on tackling childhood obesity.”
