Pictures of the horribly polluted Guanabara Bay, where the Olympic sailing and windsurfing will take place next month, have been circulating in the media. And while it is true that the bay is terribly polluted in some areas, the area where the competition will take place is much less polluted. Some Olympic teams have also deemed the athlete’s village ‘uninhabitable’ citing safety concerns and blocked up toilets. A stress test of the plumbing failed and sent water down walls and electrical wiring shortages were also reported.
