Yesterday, around 100,000 Mexican citizens were without drinking water. Thieves tapped an oil pipeline in southern Mexico that caused an oil spill that contaminated several nearby rivers. This initially left half a million citizens in the city of Villahermosa, Tabasco without clean water for drinking or washing.
Fortunately, authorities were able to reopen two out of four water filtration plants that had closed after the weekend spill, which lowered the number of waterless people down to 100,000. However, cleanup crews cannot clean the oil fast enough from the plants. Tabasco residents still have to ration water until the entire supply is cleansed, which could take 72 hours.
