A greenhouse has been built from 1,500 of the 100,000 bottles of water consumed during the Great North Run. Volunteers collected the bottles for the education centre at Campground, a Gateshead waste plant. The project was revealed at the start of Recycle Week, which this year aims to draw attention to items such as cans and bottles which are not always recycled.

Key Takeaways:

  • 1,500 empty bottles discarded by runners in the Great North Run have been put to good use to create a greenhouse at a Gateshead waste plant’s visitor and education centre.
  • Wendy Fail, the centre’s co-ordinator, collected the bottles – just a fraction of the 135,000 used during the half-marathon – with the help of a small team of volunteers
  • The project marked the first day of Recycle Week, which this year has the theme of items not always recycled, such as aerosol cans, shampoo and bleach bottles and spray cleaners.

“After re-use and recycling, residual waste is sent to Teesside’s energy from waste plant to be burned to produce electricity to power 30,000 homes.”
