While the debate regarding adding fluoride to UK tap water has been going on, Scottish researchers are investigating about putting a different substance into tap water: lithium. They hypothesize that by adding lithium to the water supply it could boost the mental health of the community as lithium is usually prescribed as a mood stabilizer, usually for people suffering from bipolar disorder. Should this even be considered?

While fluoride’s effect on a person’s mind is debatable, lithium’s effects are proven to alter a person’s brain chemistry. Even though the amount of lithium they wish to put into the water is extremely low, different people have different brain chemistry. The results are still pending, but it is troubling to think of a public utility being able to chemically calm a community.
