Governor of Colorado John Hickenlooper declared a “state of disaster emergency” over the accidental release of over 11.3 million liters of toxic wastewater from a defunct gold mine into local streams. The contamination contains high concentrations of heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, and lead, which has turn many streams into a mustard yellow color.
