Catarina de Albuquerque from Portugal has won the 2016 IWA Global Water Award. This recognised her work leading to the United Nations declaring safe drinking water and sanitation as human rights. She continues to work to implement these rights through the Sanitation and Water for All global partnership. It is estimated that a third of the world’s population currently lacks adequate sanitation, and over 800,000 deaths a year are caused by this and unsafe drinking water.
