California’s record breaking drought is in its fourth year and counting. Officials have been issuing restrictions on water use, but it can only conserve current water reserves. There needs to be an additional water source to replace the current resources. The answer might lie in a dream.
California’s “DREAM” (demonstration, recharge, extraction, and aquifer management) project hopes to recoup California’s water supply using groundwater banking. River water will be diverted into shallow pools, known as recharge ponds, where it will soak into the ground and replenish nearby aquifers. Using this method, water won’t be lost via evaporation and the technique is less costly than desalination.
