Blue gold: Water in cosmetics

On August 15, 2019, in Commentary, by Erik

In a world in which more than a billion people lack access to safe drinking water, it’s important to remember that much of the water used by humans is used in industry. This includes the beauty and personal care industry, whose products are mostly water (e.g., body lotion is approximately 90% water). For ecologically-conscious consumers, there are anhydrous formulas, such as powder dry shampoos, that use no water. Solid soap bars, two-in-one products and no rinse products also reduce water usage. Consumers often buy natural and organic products out of a sense of environmental responsibility, but they should think about water as well.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Earth has the nickname the blue planet because of its large percentage of water, which covers about 70% of the planet.
  • With water conservation on the rise, anhydrous, or water-free cosmetics are fast becoming a substitute for the water-rich products currently in the market.
  • Anhydrous options can be oil or fat based, or conversely consist of a dry powder version.

“According to Univar Solutions laboratory experts, a cream formula contains from 60-85% of water, a lotion up to 90%, and shower gel or shampoos up to 95%.”
