A stressful job can lead to a longer life as long as a worker has some control, according to researchers at Indiana University. They looked at the life spans of thousands of workers aged over 60 from 2004, and found that people with control over their workflow in high-stress roles were 34 per cent less likely to have died than people with less stressful jobs. Cancer and circulatory problems were leading causes of death, exacerbated by smoking or eating where people felt a lack of control.

Key Takeaways:

  • A stressful job could actually be good for your health, a new study has found.
  • Experts say workers in stressful jobs are a third less likely to die than those with easier roles – but only if the worker is in control of their own workflow.
  • Researchers tracked thousands of workers in their sixties from 2004 and found that, seven years later, those who had freedom and control in their high-stress role were 34 per cent less likely to have died than those in less stressful careers.
