On January 19, 2021, in Commentary, by Erik

Most of us understand that it is important to be hydrated, but many don’t understand the underlying reasons for this. Fluids help regulate body temperature, and low level of fluids can lead to irregular heat dissipation. Without adequate hydrating, we may feel fatigued, our ability to reason and think can be impacted negatively, and other body functions may be slower. The proper amount of water you need will depend on many factors and will vary for different people. One good evaluation of proper hydration is observing the color of urine. Pale and generally clear urine means your body is adequately hydrated.

Key Takeaways:

  • If you are not hydrated you may find your heart rate beating higher and you energy feeling depleted while exercising.
  • You might have to hydrate if you find yourself sweating a lot or you have specific needs due to diseases such as diabetes.
  • If you find yourself with a headache or dry cracked lips then you have clear signs that you need to drink more.

“Drinking enough fluids will help to maintain your concentration and performance, increase your endurance, and prevent excessive elevations in heart rate and body temperature. It’s all about sufficient hydration.”
