6 Reasons to Drink Water

On June 27, 2020, in Commentary, by Erik

Drinking eight glasses of water used to be the recommended amount, but it really isn’t necessary to drink that amount of water. Your brain has a thirst mechanism that can recognize that you’re thirsty, and it’s important to not ignore that. When people get older this mechanism can become weaker so it’s important to have more of an intake than what you are putting out as far as fluids. You will also want to make sure that you are getting enough fluids with exercise.

Key Takeaways:

  • The guidelines to drink eight glasses a day may be overblown, but it’s still necessary to make sure you are drinking enough
  • People who are in warmer climates, exercise a lot, or are older, may have more fluid loss, and need to be sure they drink plenty of fluids.
  • Always listen to your thirst mechanism, as it knows when your body is low on fluids and needs them to function.

“Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature.”
