Is U.K. Tap Water Really Clean?

Everyday, many citizens put the kettle on using water straight from the tap. While there are services that keep water potable, it is assumed that tap water is safe to drink. However, is tap water clean enough for regular consumption? In fact, who makes the call on whether the water is safe to drink or not?

With some oversight by the World Health Organization, individual governments mostly carry out the regulation of drinking water. The legislation set up in The Water Supply Regulations 2000 enforces the water supply to be filtered to remove bacteria, salts, metals, and all contaminants.
