According to a new survey of North East beaches, two beaches in Sunderland received a rating of excellent for the quality of the water. There were several other North East beaches that received a rating of good or excellent. this is a bi change from the year 2000, when only a handful of beaches had acceptable quality bathing water. Environmental agency heads credit the general public in the efforts to improve the quality of water and encourage continued efforts.

Key Takeaways:

  • The ratings are awarded after samples are taken by the Environment Agency between May and September each year to assess the bathing waters against the strict regulations.
  • Water quality has improved significantly over the last two decades – but to protect and enhance water quality even further we will need everyone to take the small actions that will help
  • Back in 2000, only four North East bathing waters achieved the standards that were in place at the time, so today shows a massive improvement that we and all of our partners can be proud of.

“Roker and Seaburn beaches have been given ‘excellent’ status by Defra.”
