For the first time ever, British consumers have chosen to take a healthier step in their bottled beverage purchases. In a 12 month period ending on July 15, 2017, sales of bottled water exceeded those of bottled cola by some 50 million liters. Simon Oldham, Highland Spring Group’s group commercial director, has stated that one of the primary factors contributing to water’s supersedence of cola at the top of the beverage market is an “ever-increasing focus on health.”

Key Takeaways:

  • Over a recent 12 month span, Brits bought 1.77 billion liters of unflavored water, while soda sales flagged, with the total a lesser 1.72 billion litres.
  • Highland Spring Group, Commercial Director, Oldham, noted the consumer trend and water’s victory over cola as a “huge milestone” for the bottled water industry.
  • With the trend expected to continue, estimations put bottled water sales at about 4.7 billion litres by 2021.

“..the latest research shows that sales of bottled water are now bigger than cola for the firs time as consumers continue to turn their backs on sugary drinks.”
