New York’s attorney general has been asked to begin a criminal inquiry into the black smelly waste water being discharged at the base of the Niagara Falls. The local water authority however, has released a statement saying that the black water, that appeared in July, is due to residue from a carbon-based treatment to filter the water and does not pose a public safety hazard. The plant where the water originated from has all of it’s necessary paperwork proving this claim.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Niagara Falls County Legislature has voted to have a criminal inquiry to investigate the appearance of foul, black water at the base of the namesake falls.
  • The town’s water authority asserts that the July water treatment was needed and the discharge was within permissible limits.
  • Officials affirm the plant had the proper paperwork to allow the discharge, which was from one of 5 sediment filtration basins.

“The local water authority said the colour was caused by residue from black carbon filters used to clean the water.”
