One of the fiercest battlefronts in the Syrian civil war holds the water supply for millions of Damascus residents. They have struggled with the water shortage for more than a month. The Damascus Water Authority believed the rebels contaminated the water supply with diesel. The water source is approximately 11 miles North West of the capital in the valley of Wadi Barada. Rebel fighters have withdrawn as government forces moved into the area.

Key Takeaways:

  • Water shortages have affected more than five million residents in the Damascus area since late December.
  • Activists monitoring the conflict say the army entered the area as part of a deal under which the rebels will either lay down their weapons or be evacuated.
  • The water supply was cut on 23 December by the state-run Damascus Water Authority, which blamed the rebels saying they had contaminated the flow with diesel.
