A 59-year-old contact lens-wearer lost his eye after it became seriously infected by the common bacterial species Acanthamoeba keratitis. Symptoms began as ordinary eye pain, and were not initially met with a severe diagnosis. Rapid escalation of pain as the bacteria spread to the back of his eye led to the removal of the eye. This case highlights the importance of proper cleansing technique for contact lenses, as Acanthamoeba is commonly found in tap water and in soil.
