Fresh water is a scarce commodity and a solution must be found. The majority of the earth’s water is salt water or contaminated in some fashion that it is unfit for human use. Desalination has been touted as the future of fresh water since it is now becoming less of an environmental threat, but should it really be earth’s savior?

The problem with desalination is that it hasn’t been perfected in terms of finding a means to discard the waste product left behind after the water has been cleansed. On top of that, there is the danger that we as a world might become too careless with our water and not make changes in our consumption. Even if we can desalinize water without risk, we cannot use that to justify carelessness and ignore conservation.
