This week, UN members are meeting to discuss and review ideas for their sustainable development goals (SDGs) which will be their focus for the next 15 years. Private enterprise has stepped in and champions higher private sector participation to help develop areas in need of water, food, sanitation, and medicine. However, it’s not without critics.

Indonesia has taken the private sector to court over lower service coverage than promised, a 44% water leakage level, and basic human rights violations. Similar court cases have occurred in Greece and Italy in order to get their water back from private industry. Bottom line, history is showing that private industry is looking out for its own interests, not the world’s.
