The process of fracking shale produces immense amounts of saline wastewater, which is partially why fracking receives criticism. However scientists from the U.S. and Saudi Arabia have discovered that electrolysis can progressively remove salt from the water. While the water cannot be made potable, the treated water is clean enough to be reused for fracking and thus save fresh water. Read more about this discovery here.
