More people go for water these days than soda, which is good. More people are going greener, which is good too. But, is it enough? Plastic is ruinous for the environment, that has been pointed on ad infinitum. On a personal, financial level it is an expensive commodity to keep up. Think about the amount you pay at the airport, or for cases of the stuff, delivered to your door, all for a boutique-type of a drinkable that is readily available through our taps, for almost nothing. Italians are ahead of the curve in this thinking, having already instituted a number of fountains for the use of the public to quench their thirst. Is it worth giving up on bottled water altogether? While some say bottled water is purer and safer, others note that there are brands, the Pradas of water, that aim to be “it” beverages. It’s unlikely the world would suffer without them. So, maybe.

Key Takeaways:

  • Plastic usage is harming the planet every day, which begs the question why are we continuing to bottle a commodity we already have access to.
  • In Rome, Italy there are numerous fountains for locals and visitors to quench their thirst at.
  • Although bottled water is supposed to be a safe way to consume a healthy drink, some companies actually promote their beverage as a luxury “must have.”

“There’s no consumer good we have less need of than bottled water. We spend £2.4bn a year in the UK buying stuff you can get out of the tap for free, something people in many countries would give up everything for.”
